Murphy and actor Bruno Lawrence gained fame in New Zealand with their traveling multi-media show in the early '70s. He debuted as a writer/director in 1976 with Wildman, and over the '80s made a series of memorable films with Lawrence, including his road movie Goodbye Pork Pie and his apocalyptic drama The Quiet Earth.
